Sandor Ostlund: Auditioning

AUDITIONING

The audition is the primary determining factor in determining whether or not a student will be accepted as a double bass major at the Baylor School of Music. The audition committee consists of Dr. Ostlund and one or two other faculty members from the Instrumental Division. Acceptance is based on the student’s performance abilities, artistic potential, and musical maturity as demonstrated in the audition process. Music scholarships are awarded based on the results of the audition.

UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. A movement of a concerto or other major work from the double bass solo repertoire
  2. Another piece (or movement from a larger work) in contrasting style
  3. Two standard orchestral excerpts by different composers

GRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. A movement of a concerto or other major work from the double bass repertoire
  2. Another piece or movement from a larger work in contrasting style
  3. Two contrasting movements of solo Bach (from the suites for cello)
  4. Two standard orchestral excerpts by different composers

SCHEDULING YOUR AUDITION

The School of Music has scheduled audition days posted here.

Since these auditions are scheduled on weekends, some prospective students prefer to arrange their audition and visit to Baylor during the week. This provides the opportunity to meet current students, hear the ensembles, sit in on masterclasses and/or orchestra repertoire classes, and take a private lesson. If this is of interest to you, please contact Dr. Ostlund to schedule a date and time.

To maximize scholarship consideration, prospective students are encouraged to audition as early in the year as possible.
