Andrea Beyer will lead a discussion, present a masterclass, and perform for the Baylor Bass Studio.
Double bassist Andrea Beyer is an avid performer, teacher, and advocate for music as a tool for social growth. A member of the New World Symphony from 2017-2020, Andrea’s primary focus as a performer is in orchestral music, and she has played in concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as national halls in Central and South America. Her highlights include performances with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, James Ehnes, and Emmanuel Ax, and under the batons of renowned conductors including John Adams, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Osmo Vanska.
A frequent traveler, Andrea is a substitute with the Malaysia Philharmonic and has performed recitals and taught masterclasses in Mexico, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Bolivia. As a member of the Orchestra of the Americas, she toured Chile and Central America and 2012 and 2013. She is also an alumna of the Chautauqua Music School Festival Orchestra and the Hot Springs Festival, and in 2015 she performed at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival with members of the Artis String Quartet.
In addition to performing, Andrea enjoys teaching and participating in outreach programs. Her interest in teaching was sparked in 2012-2013 when she participated in the Youth Orchestra of the America's Global Leaders Program. Throughout her graduate studies, Andrea was a teaching artist in Yale's Music in Schools program where she worked regularly with New Haven Public School students and was also a teacher for Yale undergraduate bass students. After completing her graduate degree, Andrea spent several months volunteer teaching at the El Sistema-inspired program La Orquesta Juvenil del SODRE in Montevideo, Uruguay, and in 2016-2017 she taught double bass and music theory at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine.
Andrea holds a Bachelors Degree from Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with Thomas Sperl and a Masters Degree from Yale University where she studied with Don Palma.
Currently, Andrea lives in Austin, Texas where she maintains a studio of private students, is a Teaching Artist for Austin Soundwaves, and performs regularly, including with the Central Texas Philharmonic and as a substitute for the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Opera, and the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, she co-founded Austin Unconducted, a conductorless orchestra and 501(c)3 nonprofit that builds community by creating inclusive, immersive, and relevant concert experiences that engage diverse audiences. Andrea is also on the faculty of Bass Works, a summer camp based in Baltimore, MD, is the Executive Director of the MusAid Organization, and works with numerous non-profit organizations as a freelance grant-writer. Andrea also enjoys arranging music with the objective of increasing the chamber music repertory for the bass, and, aside from her musical endeavors, enjoys cooking, yoga, and waterskiing.
